WATERMOUTH COVE, N DEVON.

Watermouth cove is a lovely part of N Devon lying between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. Its main features are its privately owned harbour, the Castle and cove caravan and campsite. The Castle which overlooks the cove is'nt actually a castle but a folly that was built in the 1850s as a private house for the Bassett family which they wanted to resemble a castle. This now contains a theme park and holiday lodges and chalets. The caravan and camp site has a lovely vista overlooking the pretty cove.On the harbour itself there is a local yacht club with private club house/ bar.The harbour frontage is about 150mtrs wide with a really gentle sloping beach out 500 mtrs to its mouth, because of its shelter it is sought after for its all year boat moorings. The sheltered beach is also ideal for families with its safe bathing and close but limited parking(in the harbour). On the headland at the mouth of the cove stands a tower, the origins of this tower are a bit vague, it looks as though it could have been a beacon tower or lookout at some time, although it was definately used for the later during the war.
