SHAMMICK for an ex Shammickite.
Above, The main beach, showing the concrete path and of course ex- shammy's old bungalow.
Above, the village looking up from the end of the bay on the concrete path. Below, look how clear the water is in these pools.
These rock pools are made by the sea leaving water behind a concrete path that has been built right around the bay, these are cleaned regularly by the higher tides which leave shrimps, crabs, other molluscs and a few varieties of fish, much to the pleasure of adults and children alike.
This picture below shows a couple of small caves which eventually became free from children(they loved them) so we were able to photograph them.
I will do a short blog about Combe Martin, being as I have done nothing locally in the last few blogs,(plus it will please ex-shammy).We have stayed in this rough area for over 40 years now and we had never ever walked on the other side of the main beach so we recently decided we would.

Hi Bob
Thanks for your comments re the playlist. Am in the process of blogging about their significance but that could take a while!!
We seem to have followed similar paths over the last week or so. Did you see I took Mum round Exmoor last week, and up to Dunkery Beacon, although we didn't walk up as she's not good on 'rough terrain' at the moment.
Hubby and I went to Lundy some years ago. Fabulous day. There's something about North Somerset/North Devon that feels like home to me - maybe because my maternal ancestors originate from the edges of Exmoor.
Keep posting the piccies!

Hi there Biker Bob:
OOOOOO thanks for posting those super pictures. Yes, my house is the bungalow in the top right corner of the first pic. I lived there until I was about 1, then we moved down into the village. My dad grew the best strawberrries in Combe Martin!
The concrete path that goes all along the beach and round the corner past the caves was put there in the 1920s or 1930s I think, and is actually the route of a sewer pipe. I have spent many hours fishing for bullheads in those pools, and used to swim in the pool where the child is crouching down on the path. One of the caves used to have a big iron ring attached to the side and we used to make up stories about pirate gold, but it was probably just a mooring ring for a boat.... I don't suppose I could find it now.
I spent my whole summer on that beach, even on rainy days! Wonderful place. You are making me so envious!!!
